Taming The Beast?!?

The room is plain and fairly empty. A few hours before, it had been a small study, but Set and Dia have cleared all of that stuff out and made it a much more fitting arena to face The Beast in. After all, he is going to be violent enough when he realizes what they are going to try to do to him. It probably isn't a good idea to give him access to anything that could be used as ammo.

Dia watches as Set paces around the room checking the various wards that he placed on it when they moved in. They aren't anything special--just a few detection runes--but they were never meant to do anything like keeping The Beast in check. The Beast himself has seen to it that Set can't do anything like that. That is why Bazett is stopping by. She doesn't have to try and work around The Beast to do her work; she can just do it.

Set flops down into a cross-legged sit in the middle of the floor and sighs, "I think that's it until she comes. Hopefully, it won't be too long. I think he's starting to wonder. I'm trying to distance myself, but..."

Dia nods, fingering the capped needle in his hand, "I'm really sorry about this. I hate having to do it."

"Don't be, it has to be done and this is the safest way. Just promise me something," Set gives him a hard look. "Make sure you make the most of this. You need to talk to him. I doubt he's going to let us get away with this very often. Heck, maybe not ever again. This might be the only chance we get."

"I-I know," Dia's voice wavers a moment and then he steadies himself. "I am preparing myself. It's going to hurt, but hopefully it will be the first step toward making it so it doesn't hurt so much anymore."

Set smirks and motions for Dia to come and sit with him. When Dia joins him, he wraps his arms around his lover, "That's my Baby! You have no idea how good it makes me feel to hear you say that."

Dia blushes slightly, but doesn't reply. Instead, they wait for Bazett to again make her way into their home.

"The wording I will leave to you as the caster. I am no good at these kind of things. Nor is He. We're just used to being on the receiving end." For a moment, The Beast actually looks a little like he might have been remembering or half-remembering something from their past, "I'm glad to see you are willing to do this now. I don't know when I my be this calm again."

"Are you sure you want to do this? Nothing good has ever come of these in the past!" Dia objects.

"I would say this is a little different, wouldn't you, Little Bird? And if I fail and it weakens me, then you will just have to try harder to protect me," The Beast smirks at him for a moment, before returning to seriousness. "I don't know if targeting the change from one to the other will work. It is just asking too much and He cannot control that anyway."

"You're right, that would just be setting you both up for failure which is the last thing we want." Dia pauses to think for a moment before adding, "Do you think it would be possible to target his mindset itself? Like something that will force him to stop and calm himself should he become so enraged that he wants to hurt me."

"That would be a good starting point. So...if I were to word it, I might say that he must retreat to a secluded spot if he were to have the urge to hurt Diarmuid? Would that be alright?"

"That would be good except for the secluded spot bit. I don't want him running off somewhere if he is that upset," Dia points out. "That would be disaster in the making. Just having him back off to a corner of the Lair or just the Lair itself if he's not there would probably be better.

"Do you think it would be best to focus on not hurting me or just not hurting anyone? Just in case something goes badly wrong in public, I mean. Or would that be too much?"

"I won't agree to not hurting anyone and neither will He," The Beast fixes Dia with a hard look. "Because that would mean we couldn't protect you if it came to it. Like hell will we ever agree to that!"

"I must agree with the Beast. A more generalized geis leaves more room for things to go wrong. At the same time, it would completely restrain him from fighting. I am sure that is not something he would want."

She looks down at the Beast.

"I am going to cast the geis now."

She begins chanting the words of the curse's spell. But this is more than the matter of one person being forced into another's power. This is a promise between warriors.

Dia starts to object, but falls silent when Bazett declares her intention to begin. He really doesn't like this and would have rather tried something else--anything else--before this. No geis had ever turned out well for he or Set. As a matter of fact, they had actually lead to their deaths.

The Beast on the other hand watches and listens to her closely. It's a process he's familiar with from their memories and when the time comes for him to accept, he does so with a smile and a steady voice.

For a moment afterward, Dia just watches The Beast in silence. If it hadn't been for the fact that The Beast's hair is darker, his skin lighter and his eyes black and red instead of just red, he would have sworn it was Set who had accepted the geis.

It is a little disconcerting to say the least.

She watches the ritual end as the false heart created by the geis settles above the Beast's actual heart.

"My part is done. Diarmuid, is there anything else we need to do?"

Dia ignores her at first, moving to place his hand gently against The Beast's heart where the magic had settled itself. It had scared him seeing that process even more than just talking about it had. For a moment, his heart had seemed to stop--frozen in place by the bad memories.

The Beast places his hand over Dia's and gives it a squeeze, "It will be all right, Little Bird."

Dia nods and sighs, finally turning to Bazett, "I'm sorry. Yes, unless there is more that you would like to ask of him, you are done. You don't have to stay and listen to us talk if you don't wish to. Thank you for everything. I-I'm just having a hard time of this for some reason. I guess there are just some things that are hard to get over no matter how much time passes."

"...I guess I will stay and listen this time."

Just in case anything bad happens.

"Beast, would you like me to undo your restraints?

The Beast looks at his hands for a moment and then shrugs, "It's not like I can hurt him now. Not without breaking the geis. I don't really care, but perhaps they should stay for now. If there is a chance they are helping me remain logical, it would be best they stay as long as possible."

He removes his hand from Dia's and pulls the other man closer in an effort to reassure him, "It will be okay, Little Bird. He isn't upset, so you shouldn't be either. This is the best way."

"I know," Dia admits after a few moments of silence. "That doesn't mean I have to like it."

The Beast kisses him lightly on the head and then turns to Bazett, "This plan you have for the Association. Explain it to me."

"I cannot say I am familiar with their dealings, but I remember working with them once. I also have some sort of Presence Concealment due to the class blending. It is possible I could follow the Association's Enforcers and glean information from their conversations. Meanwhile Diarmuid can continue using this journal. If the Association catches on to us, I will fight their Enforcers and allow Diarmuid time to escape."

"If we can can connect to each other and use skills like Bazett's to find out what plans the Association is making, then we can find a way to protect ourselves from them," Dia explains. "One day I hope that we can live without worrying about their shadow hanging over us. We can go out and not have to worry about them trying to trick and trap us."

"And you just need me to be good while you do this so that they don't notice anything funny," The Beast reaches down and wraps Dia's stray bang around his finger, giving it a light pull. "In any event, He will be of more use to you than me. Fine, just so that I can come out and kill the bastards when the time comes. It is what I am best at anyway."

"Only if they attack."

The Enforcers were, after all, only doing their jobs.

"But for now, we have to focus on finding other heroes."

Perhaps more options would open up once she finishes recovering her memories.

The Beast mutters under his breath, but doesn't directly argue the point for which Dia is glad. While he likes Bazett and he extremely grateful for everything she has done for them, Dia cannot understand why she is still willing to give anyone tied to the Association any credit. Especially after all they have told her the Association has done to their fellow servants. Arguing the point with her, though, will only cause hard feelings that Dia would really rather avoid.

"Little Bird, I'm getting tired, I think this may be about the extent that I can remain sane. I know you have more to talk about, but it will probably be best if I allow Him out before I slide back into madness. There is no need to test the geis' strength so soon."

"Go back to sleep, Beast. Hopefully, when you choose to wake again, there will be no disasters awaiting you."

It is a little sad. Beast can probably never enjoy life for himself, since he is a fragment of another being.

The Beast nods and gives Dia one more kiss on the top of his head before shutting his eyes. A slight shimmer as his body changes later and Set is back with them.

Set is quiet for a few moments pulling himself together and then looks up at Bazett with a smile and tired eyes, "Well, that went better than we could have hoped. Maybe you're a lucky charm, Lass. It's been a while since he's been that lucid. Especially for that long."

"I cannot take all of the credit. Diarmuid helped, and the Beast exercised much of his own will."

She offers him a hand in case he wishes to stand up.

"Do you feel anything strange? Besides the geis that the Beast allowed me to put on your body?"

Set nods to acknowledge her hand, but doesn't take it, "Thanks, but I think I'll stay sitting for the moment. Still shaking off all of the grogginess from the switch. Aside from the geis, I can sense the runes you put on him still. Not bad, Lass. Not bad at all."

Dia sits up and fixes Set with a worried look, "Are you sure you are okay with all this? I mean,,,,"

Set reaches out and covers Dia's mouth with his hand to quiet him, "It's fine. This is definitely one geis I'm glad to take."

With another order, she disperses the binding runes.

"You will still be able to fight. As long as Diarmuid does not interfere. I believe with the help of the geis, he would be able easily restrain the Beast should it ever attack an innocent."

Set nods, "Like I said, Lass. You're good at this. I bet Scathach would have loved to have you as a student."

"If nothing else she wouldn't end up finding her sleeping with her daughter, now would she?" Dia can't help but smirk. He's still unsure about all of this, but if everyone else was okay with it, then it wouldn't do him any good to continue to worry.

Set looks at him for a moment, a little surprised to hear such a joke from his lover and then starts laughing, "Oh, I don't know. We don't know how the Lass swings now do we? We shouldn't make assumptions."

Her face turns almost completely red.

"S-stop it. I know that my runic magic can likely never match yours. And even if Scathach were still around to take me as her pupil, I have no desire to sleep with her daughter!"

Set laughs again, "It was a joke, Lass. Neither of us expected that you would. We're just trying to lighten things up a bit after all that. Even well behaved, The Beast is a downer. However," Set's eyes twinkle as he winks at her. "If you are interested, I could always see about giving you some lessons. You seem to have plenty of potential. You just need practice."

"I wonder," Dia smirks softly. "Do you think she might have eventually made it to the Throne? Of course, she would have had to die first and that is the hard part."

A look that is a mix of horror, curiosity, and maybe even a little excitement crosses Set's face, "Oh wouldn't that be something. If she showed up here..."

"Forgive me for asking a personal question, but why do you not expect Scathach to be part of the Throne?"

There were so many conflicting legends about that female hero. Some said she was a goddess, others just a very well-learned human warrior. But none of the legends had ever spoken of her end.

"You usually have to die to become a heroic spirit, right Lass?" There is a momentary flash of pain across his face--as if a memory he didn't like had passed by and then been pushed very quickly away, "That was something she never could quite figure out. We tried pretty hard to find a way too."

When Set trails off, Dia picks up to add in a few details, "She was a very skilled mortal, Bazett. Some people would say almost too skilled. The stories say when she realized she was becoming more than mortal because of that skill and her legend, she began seeking a way to die as a mortal. It was all she wished for. Unfortunately, but the time she started looking, it was already too late. Even her greatest pupil couldn't grant her wish."

"Sorry."

She mutters. It must have been a horrible thing for Cu Chulainn to see his teacher in that state.

"The Shattering released all heroes, correct? If she somehow died in the future, even if she lives in the modern day, she should be here in some form."

It is bad attempt at comforting him, and she knows it.

"Don't worry so much, Lass. She kicked my ass hard after that. Obviously, I was a poor student if I couldn't even kill one person," Set smiles to let her know that while there is a bitter edge to the memories, he still enjoys thinking about them. "Just think, Lass. If she is out there somewhere, she could teach you and Dia how to keep me in line!"

"What makes you think she won't be kicking my ass as well, Set?" Dia asks, smirk back on his face. "She may think me as much of a lost cause as you."
